Difficulty swallowing can be one of the most challenging [if not terrifying] aspects of this condition we call Parkinson’s disease. In fact, it was the increasing difficulty I was having swallowing that contributed to the panic attacks I experienced in 2014. I was under the mistaken assumption I would eventually require feeding tubes. The neurologist I was seeing at the time assured me that this was not the case.
Difficulty swallowing is the result of two things: tension and tightness in the neck and throat, and muscles in the throat forgetting what to do because of impaired signals from the brain.
Since overcoming the panic attacks, I have learned how to manage this condition through:
- Focused swallowing
- Chew my food to a liquid
- Healing mantra
Bodywork, including, chiropractic treatments, Body Stress Relief and Bowen therapy, has been the single most effective strategy for improving my ability to swallow normally. Part of the session with each therapy includes relieving tension in the neck and throat muscles.
Stretching the neck muscles is part of my daily recovery regimen.
Whenever I am about to swallow, I focus my attention on it in order to encourage the muscles to do what they’re supposed to do, much like I focus my attention on walking normally in order to overcome shuffle walking.
Chew my food to a liquid:
Wallace Wattles, author of, The Science of Being Well, advises us to chew our food to a liquid in order to maximize the nutritional value of the food. It also helps ensure smooth swallowing.
Vocalizing, such as singing and yelling, helps to exercise the neck and throat muscles, which in turn, helps them do a better job of swallowing.
Whenever I am feeling tension, tightness and/or phlegm in my throat, I recite my healing mantra:
Thank you Spirit and thank you higher self, for severing and dissolving the synapses and neural pathways, neutralizing the energetic frequency, healing and releasing from my body and from my being, all of the fear, anger and detrimental thoughts and beliefs, and all of the shame, grief, guilt, resentment, bitterness and unresolved emotional energy that are at the root of the tension, tightness and phlegm I am experiencing in my throat, and I thank you for this healing and I thank you for increasing the effectiveness of this healing by 100 times or more.
Wishing you an awesome day!
