The Best Driving Songs

golden earringThere is nothing quite like the exhilaration of getting behind the wheel of the car, cranking up the stereo and heading out on the road, especially at night! And there’s nothing that adds more to the experience (your driving companions not withstanding!) than some good driving songs!

If you’re like me, you can remember exactly where you were when a certain song came on the radio … like driving down highway 400 between Barrie and Toronto in the spring of 1976 listening to Bohemian Rhapsody.

Bismillah! No, we will not let you go. (Let him go!)
Bismillah! We will not let you go. (Let him go!)

… then again, perhaps, it’s the scene from Wayne’s World that makes it so memorable!

Bruce Springsteen might just be the king of driving songs. He has written a few beauties, including Thunder Road and Born to Run!

Creedence Clearwater Revival also wrote some great driving songs, like Up Around the Bend and Sweet Hitch Hiker.

And is there any song more road worthy than Steppenwolf’s, Born to be Wild? The song, of course, was immortalized in the road movie Easy Rider.

As much as I love these songs, they’re not among my favourite five. This list includes three songs that aren’t really about driving, as well as the quintessential driving song:

5. Do You Feel Like We Do … Peter Frampton

4. Riders of the Storm … The Doors

3. Stairway to Heaven … Led Zeppelin

2. Hotel California … The Eagles

1. Radar Love … Golden Earring

Awesome songs, indeed, whether you associate them with driving or not:

I’ve been drivin’ all night, my hand’s wet on the wheel
There’s a voice in my head that drives my heel
It’s my baby callin’, says ‘I need you here’
And it’s a half past four and I’m shifting gear

I’m feeling the urge to head out on the highway … go lookin’ for adventure … whatever comes my way … awesome!

Have an awesomely driven day!
