What would disappear if we all felt good about ourselves

end of suffering

Last week at my martial arts club I asked the students what would disappear from the planet if we all felt good about ourselves. Here are some of their answers:

  • murder
  • war
  • bullying
  • crime
  • suicide
  • rape
  • eating disorders

I would add the following to the list:

  • abuse
  • abandonment
  • corruption
  • brutality
  • fraud
  • greed
  • persecution
  • discrimination
  • poverty
  • unemployment
  • homelessness

Why would these things disappear? Because when you feel good about yourself you don’t mistreat others. You don’t do anything that will cause another to suffer.

This leads t0 my next question. If all these things were to disappear if we all felt good about ourselves, then why isn’t everyone talking about it and more importantly, why aren’t we doing something about it? Why isn’t this a priority issue with families, schools, communities and government?

The answer is simple, because we live in a society that is predominantly driven by individual economic gain … a thirst for money, power and fame.

It is up to each of us to decide which is more important.

Have an awesomely peaceful day!

  1. I like this post, and with love and compassion the world would be a different lplace. It should be taught in schools but even in Primary schools you find bullying because of race or greed or hate. What a shame that such young children have already so many negative emotions in them. If meditation was taught in school, that might help? Lots of children are not experiencing love and that is the first emotion and the most important to feel good about yourself.

    • Thank you Ute. As a whole, with our focus on money, careers, convenience and materialism, we’re doing a pretty abysmal job of raising our children. Schools are full of kids who don’t feel good about themselves and they’re taking it out on other kids. Then they grow up to be parents and the cycle starts all over again. It’s sad.
